Why Adobe DRM excludes Mobipocket one

Postby pcasar on Mon Aug 10, 2009 8:42 pm

I tried the new firmware (beta version) for my bebook and I can't read my mobipocket book with drm. I bought those books to read them on my bebook and now, with the new firmware I'd like to choose which books with drm I want to read without changing the firmware each time.

I can't understand which could be the legal problem in having an eReader capable to read Adobe drm and Mobipocket drm as well. In which countries this legal problem is real?

The BeBook is different from Kindle, BeBook is better than Kindle because I can read any books or I should think that now the BeBook is owned by Adobe like Amazon owns its reader.

I see that the firmware of the BeBook is under the GPL license, so where is the source code of the firmware? Also the previous version (2.02) is release under GPL, so I want to know where I can download the source code of these firmwares.

Best regards,
Paolo.

Paulo.
It has been discussed to death on this and other forums and you were given plenty of warning about the cost of upgrading. Amazon, the owners of the Mobi format demand DRM exclusivity on reading devices and it is not possible to have Mobi DRM and another DRM'd format on the same device. No-one likes it but there is nothing to be done. Re-install the previous firmware if you want to continue reading DRM'd Mobi or strip the DRM from your files because they are your only choices at the moment.

ps It has nothing to do with legalities and everything to do with licensing.

Of course, if there were no DRM.......

And what about GPL license? If you make downloadable the firmware source code, I can build a firmware for my use that make possible to have Amazon DRM and Adobe DRM...

And also, why this legal problem exists in eReader and does not exist in a pc that runs linux? What's the difference between the BeBook and a very little pc (with linux installed) and a eInk display?

The code to implement these DRM schemes is not open source, and as such you won't be able to compile a version that allows both formats to be read. (or even one of these formats, for that matter)

This has nothing to do with a legal problem. It has to do with a licensing problem.
Amazon does not allow ebook readers to decode their DRM (i.e. they don't allow the manufacturers to license their decoding software) if another DRMed format is readable on that device.

By the way, there are no official programs for Linux that allow one to read DRMed Mobipocket or even DRMed ePub.

How can I insert an entire adobe document into a microsoft word document, preserving the entire adobe document? I need to insert and Adobe pdf file into a microsoft word document. I tried copy and paste, but it only puts in the words. I tried a snapshot, but that only does one page at a time.

To convert .pdf's to .doc's go to the free (gratis)
http://www.pdftoword.com/success_page.htm.

I use it regularly and it works fine. After uploading a .pdf to the site it will take some time before you receive the result, so be patient.

To convert the edited .doc into .pdf again I use the MSword 2007 with an addon for PDF output. That also works fine.
Met vriendelijke groet.
