Postby negotium on Thu Feb 04, 2010 7:40 pm

No there is not but you can use any dictionary that uses the .dict format and they are, I believe, all free.

I personally use a second electronic device for a dictionary, namely a Franklin Merriam -Webster Dictionary & Thesaurus. I admit I already had it, but it works for me.

Ok let us suppose that but does it mean I can automatically display the definition by highlighting one word of the text I read?

Hi,
I've converted the largest english startdict dictionary to Lbook format. Have a look at
http://bebookmini.lsak.com/20100209_dictd_www.dict.org_gcide+makedict_conversion_to_dictd_thelude.zip to download the already free dictionary. Running Lbook it enables you (using coolreader) to lookup words when reading a book.
Have fun!

great conversion.

The dictionary function on the Bebook Neo uses stardict itself so the conversion you made can't be used until further support is included in the firmware or in third party tools.

Sadly the dictionary function is (at this moment) hardly working. Possibly this was fixed in the Onyx firmware that will be installed on the Bebook Neo - we will not know until someone who received one will reply with details.

The ability to look up words just by tapping them (like on the Sony PRS 600) is a very attractive feature to me. I'd like to know the Neo has this functionality before I place an order, so any further information on this topic would be appreciated.

hi dw,

Just to confirm the Neo works fine with dictionaries - i initially thought it wasnt working until I released you only have tap on any part of the word (I was trying to highlight/select the word which just goes forward or back a page depending on the direction you swipe)

please note though the dictionary function is only as good as the dictionary you have installed - you can download free ones or buy commercial ones - on the free ones I occasionally had to switch between dictionaires I had to find the word - luckily you can do this within the search so its just a an extra tap of the stylus.

Im getting more and more attached to my Neo :D

@Red
Are you able to lookup a word that is not capitalised? If so, what dictionary are you using?

yes, all non capitalised, but I hastened to add the lookup button seems to be tacked on for display purposes (!) doesn't seem to do anything - but i tap on any word and it comes up with the 'explanation' button highlighted, and the explanation to the right of this. I had a few hit and misses with the other free dictionaries for eg some of them give me complete gobble-de-gook, capital letters or no capital letters. So far, touch wood, WordNet has the best results, whatever i tap.

get it here http://stardict.sourceforge.net/Dictionaries_dictd-www.dict.org.php - the one marked 'WordNet'. You will need to untar (decompress) the file before putting this on your sd card. If you dont know what Im talking about just download 7zip (has mac, windows and linux versions) and one of the best free compression/decompression tools I have used over the years.
